Ruth Joshua is an elderly widow. She injured her back and can only walk using a stool which she pushes in front of her as she inches her way around her house. But there is a smile on her face as her house is new.
A church in England provided Footsteps with the money to build her a new home to replace the disintegrating mud hut she used to live in. “I have received a very good house – thank you!” says Ruth.
Ruth’s house is made of coral block – the material commonly used in Mombasa. Further west, in the Lake Victoria region, Footsteps has built homes for widows using traditional construction methods for the walls (wooden frame covered with mud), but with metal sheet roofs to improve the life-span of each home.
A new home for a widow in Lake Victoria costs around £500. A coral block home in Mombasa is £1,000. The average price for a house in the UK is £186,755!
